“Shillet Hamal” is a Palestinian production that was made possible through a grant from Culture Resource Production Awards Program. The song deals with the seclusion that a person deals with when they feel like they don’t belong to what is prevalent in society because they feel different in terms of mentality and ideology.
The video clip is inspired by all individuals who chose unconventional paths for their careers, and seeking creativity and innovation, the expression of new ideas for people without a voice, and the creation of a relatively unique space for disseminating humanitarian values such as faith in people’s autonomous capacities, the right to differ constructively, the freedom of expression that respects the freedom of others, and the ability to follow one’s dreams.
The airplane scene was filmed with Nablus and includes local dancers who have chosen these atypical paths in their life according to society. They have created their own community where they are able to express themselves and flourish as artists.
The message of the song is a simple and a complex human message at the same time. It examines the margins of freedom of expression and how Arab youth can live a satisfied life.
Lyrics and Direction by Bashar Murad. This is Bashar’s second work in the Arab pop style. In January of this year, the song “IlKul 3am Bitjawaz” was released, which deals with societal pressure on youth to get married.
Bashar was born in a musical family in 1993. He was surrounded by a creative and artistic environment since his youth and this created an early relationship between Bashar and music.
Bashar writes songs in both English and Arabic that reflect the experience of East Jerusalemites. His words address social issues including self-acceptance, tolerance, gender equality, marriage pressure, and Israeli occupation.
